North Shore Infrared
Finally made my way up north! It’s a rarity for me these days to make the drive (1x/year on average). A big WNW swell and light variable winds lined up with my day off, so I decided to crawl out from under my rock and take advantage of the pristine conditions.
Ehukai Beach Park
Arrived an hour later than I wanted due to morning traffic, but still found a nice spot to settle in and watch the action in the shade.
The swell size was perfect, just barely feathering around 2nd reef on the largest sets. Both Backdoor and Pipeline were offering up big barrels.
The crowd in the water was heavy, as pros practicing for the WSL Pipe event mixed in with the locals. It’s also crazy how low the drone pilots were flying to the waves.
My memory card on my main camera was almost full after a couple hours of shooting so it was time to head back home. I stopped by Kualoa to take some experimental shots and stretch the legs a bit (my knees were not happy after standing still for so long).
There is a parallax effect on this stretch of road that gives the illusion that Mokoli’i/China Man’s Hat is shrinking. I need to re-take this shot about a hundred meters back.
I spent a lot of time in this tree when I was a kid. Somehow the tree looks a lot smaller now.
Mokoli’i
Minimalism. Imagine having this stretch of beach to yourself on a beautiful day like this.
Spot fishing. All he needed was a hand-line.

I’ve been having so much fun with my full-spectrum converted camera for these infrared shots. It excels in sunny/midday conditions. And recently, I experimented without the 720nm filter to see if I could still shoot traditional color photos. I found out that you can if you set the custom white balance correctly (although the image may suffer from flaring and halation).
I’ll be posting a gallery of the pictures I shot at Pipe soon. There’s over 1,000 images to filter through and edit.
